International Rugby Sevens Tournament

International Schools Rugby Sevens Tournament

Led onto the pitch by the School’s Corps of Drums and with flags flying, school teams came from Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan as well as from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to help celebrate our Sporting Heritage in our 450th Anniversary year.  On March 24 and 25, over 1000 spectators enjoyed a spectacular display of Rugby Sevens played out in glorious weather on The Close. The matches were also streamed, and attracted well over 100,000 views over the two days. Shore from Sydney won the Bowl in third place, Clifton from Bristol won the Plate, and the winners of the 450th Anniversary Tournament Cup were Hilton College from Kwa-Zulu Natal. All players received a 450th Tournament medal.

Jason Leonard, our Tournament Ambassador, gave very generous support over both days, signing programmes and standing for photographs with both young and old! All schools who took part felt privileged to be playing on the field where the game all began in 1823, and we all felt privileged to be watching such a respectful display of combat that is Rugby Sevens at its best. With the hospitality marquee at one end and the grandstand and players ‘village’ at the other, The Close made a magnificent arena for this great Anniversary event.

The schools that participated were:

Clifton College, England
Fettes College, Scotland
Hilton College, South Africa
Llandovery College, Wales
Marlborough College, England
Michaelhouse, South Africa
Nelson College, New Zealand
Oita Maizuru, Japan
Royal Belfast Academical Institution, N. Ireland
Rugby School, England
Shawnigan Lake School, Canada
Shore School, Australia
