Film & Media
Courses are offered to the sixth form only as an Extended Project qualification in Film Making.
The department is equipped with a fully operational Full HD broadcast quality studio comprising of three HD broadcast camera’s and a full live mixing facility. A second studio houses a 180 degree green screen room and an operational set. There are 18 Adobe edit suites, where pupils can edit their HD and even 4K footage together to create films and realise their dreams.
Students use their film-making skills in various areas, working practically with Philosophy, PE, Modern Languages, Theatre Studies and other departments. The annual Media Trip gives students the chance to travel abroad on location to shoot their final pieces, thus ensuring good quality light and contrasting locations in destinations such as Tuscany and the Costa del Sol.
Pupils have won film competitions at all levels and several have chosen to study film at university and then work creatively within the industry. For example, twin sixth formers won Best Grand Prize in the ‘Kids for Kids Film Festival 2014’. Hugo and Ollie Inglis (above) were winners of the 13-19-year-old category at the event at the British Film Institute when their seven-minute film ‘Out of the Box’ was shown on a full size cinema screen. Through the Thursday afternoon services programme, pupils have been involved in several community projects, such as preparing video material for the police, creating educational films on domestic violence and anti-racism. They have also worked with other schools in the Rugby area and producing collaborative art-based films for Rugby Borough Council.
Debates, lectures and dramatic productions are broadcast live across the campus while international live communications can be made via internet links. Rugby School is unique in this outstanding facility and a weekly film-making club runs throughout the year to give all pupils the opportunity to use the equipment.
