Cricket

Rugby fields ten boys’ teams across all age groups and has recently introduced girls’ cricket to the program. The U15’s girls started very successfully and have reached the final of the Warwickshire Schools Cup. The Under 14s have had much success over the years in the Warwickshire schools’ tournament and following this success the Under 15s often progress well in the national competition.

The School has been fortunate to have had a succession of excellent cricket professionals including Nick Cook (England), Gary Brent (Zimbabwe) and currently, Michael Powell, who is in post as Director of Cricket. Michael is a former Warwickshire Cricket Captain, England ‘A’ Player and successfully led Warwickshire to the B & H trophy in 2002.

The fixture list is strong and includes schools such as Bedford, Oundle, Stowe, Uppingham, St Edwards, Clifton and Marlborough. The XI has a proud record in recent seasons. Success has been helped by the facilities (the school has two indoor cricket centres), a programme of overseas tours, commitment of staff and the dedicated full time Director of Cricket.

The tour program currently features a major senior tour to Sri Lanka and a lower school tour to Dubai & the UAE. The tours run bi-annually and have been a real success. They play an integral part in the development of Cricketers at Rugby School.

Our winter Cricket program involves one-to-one sessions with Michael and a mixture of group practices open to all age groups. The School currently has a couple of international cricketers amongst the pupil body and countless age-group county cricketers. Michael works closely with County Academy Directors to ensure that individual programs for the pupils at Rugby are managed effectively.

2015 saw only the 5th Rugbeian to reach 1000 runs for the XI in a season. Robbie Povey reached 1027 runs on the final day of the season an achievement that adds to the great history of Cricket at the School
