Hockey is the major game for boys in the Lent term, and for girls in the Advent term. The School currently fields 15 teams for the boys and 17 teams for the girls, allowing every pupil who wishes to play hockey to represent the School in matches against other schools on a regular basis.
The standard of hockey at Rugby is high, and we compete amongst the top hockey schools in the country. Our Under 16 boys have just become 2018 County Champions. In 2017, our Girls’ XI and U16 sides took the County Championship titles for the second year in a row while the Girls XI progressed further, reaching the Midlands Semi finals. Both the Under 15 boys and the XI girls reached the semi finals of the National Independent Schools Hockey Cup in 2016-17.
We also have a great number of individuals playing at an elite level, with many pupils having achieved selection for England Hockey Academy Centres, Performance Centres, Futures Cup Tournaments, and the England U16 and England U18 National Squads.
We pride ourselves on our facilities and coaching provision, including one-to-one training, video analysis, strength and conditioning and specific skills sessions to support our players. The School has also invested in three, top class synthetic turf pitches providing an excellent infrastructure that enables us host a number of tournaments throughout the year.
Indoor Hockey takes place in two full sized sports halls. Boys' and girls' teams compete in national indoor competitions and training takes place in both the Advent and Lent terms.
Tours are run every year. Most recently the Under 15 boys and girls visited Barcelona in October 2016 while the senior girls enjoyed a three-week tour to New Zealand in the Summer 2016. The Under 15 boys toured Holland in October 2017 while we have a full sports (hockey, rugby and netball) to Singapore and Australia in Summer 2018.
