Hockey is the major game for girls in the Advent Term and for boys in the Lent Term.
The School fields 17 teams for the girls and 13 teams for the boys, allowing every pupil who wishes to play hockey to represent the School in matches against other schools on a regular basis.
The standard of hockey at Rugby is high, and we compete amongst the top hockey schools in the country. In 2016, our girls’ XI and U16 sides took the County Championship titles and qualified for the regional stages. The XI progressed further to reach the semi-finals of the penultimate round of the national competition. This same team has also been involved in the U19 Independent Schools’ National Cup for which they are currently in preparation for the semi-final fixture.
We also have a great number of individuals playing at an elite level, with many pupils having achieved selection for England Hockey Academy Centres, Performance Centres, Futures Cup Tournaments and the England U16 and England U18 National Squads.
We offer a number of leading coaching facilities, including one-to-one training, video analysis, strength and conditioning and specific skills sessions to support our players. The School has also invested in three, top class synthetic turf pitches, providing an excellent infrastructure that enables us host a number of tournaments throughout the year.

Our Director of Hockey is James Stedman. He currently plays for Holcombe HC in Kent who won the National Premier Division in 2016 and competed in the European Hockey League in October 2016.
At his previous school, Ardingly College, James brought in a series of international players and coaches to work with the boys and girls and he introduced indoor hockey in 2012. Ardingly won numerous Sussex County titles and qualified for two National Girls Finals in 2014 and 2016. He has also run tours to South Africa, Barcelona and the Hague.
My views of Rugby School: With 18 girls teams and 13 boys teams, three all weather pitches and two full sized sports halls for indoor hockey, plus talented staff and part time coaches, exciting plans are in place for Rugby School hockey. I am looking forward to both pushing our elite players but also ensuring we create a culture of enjoyment and participation for anyone who plays hockey here at Rugby School.
Other sports: Cricket (Bedfordshire Minor Counties player); claim to fame was opening the batting at Bedford School with former England captain, Alastair Cook!
