Netball is the major game for girls in the Lent term, although pre-season sessions also occur throughout the advent term. Rugby fields 18 netball teams involving 180 girls. Every single girl who attends Rugby School will participate in the netball programme in the F Block, and many choose to continue with this major game throughout their whole Rugby career. Every girl who chooses to play netball represents Rugby in matches against other schools on a weekly basis, in a very full fixture card.
Each netball team, regardless of the level, is teamed with their own member of staff throughout the entire season. We are also fortunate enough to be able to offer a strong network of specialist coaches who are invaluable to our netball programme. Each coach will share their expertise across a range of abilities and age groups. We are fortunate to have recently added a netball development officer to our programme. Lesley Blair works closely with the West midlands set up of England netball and her expertise that she adds to our netball programme are invaluable.
The standard of netball at Rugby school has continued to grow from strength to strength. In 2014, the school won every block fixture on its fixture card, with the 1st VII securing an unbeaten season in all their main Saturday matches. Rugby now regularly wins County titles, and over the past few years we have progressed to regional finals with a variety of age groups.
Recent tours to, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia have provided the girls with a challenging level of netball, and not only acted as pre-season, but also provided a once in a life time chance to experience a different sporting culture.
The facilities available to the girls at Rugby School are second to none. We are home to seven netball courts, five of which are floodlit, and a full sized indoor court in the Sports Centre and another full sized indoor court at the Collingwood Centre. The girls also have access to a well-equipped fitness suite and a 25m swimming pool to aid their recovery. These facilities and the commitment of both staff and pupils help to explain the success that is apparent across all 18 teams.
