Tennis

Tennis is played throughout the year at Rugby with all level of pupils encouraged to play the game. The top players get the opportunity to play three to four times a week amongst their already busy schedules. There is the opportunity for any level of player to participate in regular weekly lessons throughout the year with one of our highly experienced and qualified coaches. We currently have more than 150 pupils taking advantage of extra tuition each week and demand continues to grow as tennis becomes increasingly popular within the School. This number typically doubles in the Trinity Term.

Pupils have the benefit of training with Head Tennis Coach, Jamie Taylor, a Level 4 senior club coach who has competed in international tournaments beating world ranked players, in addition to gaining a national ranking of 62 in British Men’s Tennis. A number of high calibre coaches support Mr Taylor: David Ireland, Bobby Brooke, Ambrus Pinter and Lee Moreton (please see a brief biography below). The great wealth of experience our coaches bring enables Rugby to stand out from the crowd. Each coach is very passionate about the sport and in developing each individual to meet their potential with the fundamental emphasis on having fun on court.

Tennis is the main sport offered to boys and girls as a major sport during the Trinity Term.  Teams are fielded at all age ranges, with up to three teams of six fielded in an age group. Competitive fixtures are played throughout the year, with the majority during Trinity.

Facilities

35 tennis courts are available to pupils during the Trinity Term; eight all year round hard tennis courts, three all year around astro-turf tennis courts with a further 24 astro-turf courts in the summer. These fantastic facilities combined with the provision of video analysis and match charting provide valuable feedback on performance for team players.

Competition

The pinnacle of the Trinity Term is the Independent Schools’ Competition at Eton College, when four boys and four girls in both the under 15 and under 18 age groups compete. Rugby School also participates in the national AEGON Schools competition at all ages, allowing the top pupils in each year group to challenge their skills against other schools in the country. Pupils have been rewarded with the hard work they have put into the sport with notable achievements below:

  • Senior Boys won the national AEGON Senior Students title - (2014)
