2014 Match Reports

Metors v School matches

24 May 2014
A complete and disappointing washout of both matches. Again, Fergus Maclehose (M 01-06) and Nik Darlington (Sh 99-04) had each raised an exciting XI for these popular fixtures.

Cricketer Cup Round 1
Sunday 16 June

Rugby Meteors were drawn at home v Old Tonbridgians (perennial winners of this competition).

On a dry but overcast day OTCC won the toss and elected to bat. Good tight bowling from the start from Matt Ewer (Ma + T 93-99) and excellent fielding had them reeling at 69 for 6 before Arscott (58) guided them to a more respectable 171 all out off 47.1 overs. The pick of our bowlers were Paul Clarke (SF 08-13) (2-38), Matt Ewer (1-24 off 10) and George Terry (M 07-12) (3-33). In reply Wobbly Hardwick fairly raced out of the blocks with 32 off 18 balls. Jake Kings (W 07-12) then dominated the rest of the innings making a very impressive 72 before getting out with 4 runs needed.

Needless to say it would not have been in true Meteoric style if there had still not been time for one or two concerns before Charlie Wedgwood hit the winning runs for a 4 wicket victory. We now travel to Winchester in Round 2 to play the Old Wykhamists on Sunday 29 June.

Sundays XI was: Jaimie Noble (K 97-02) (capt), Joe Moxham (W 08-10), Ralph Hardwick (K 01-06), Jake Kings (W 07-12),Tom Clarke (SH 06-11), Matt Ewer (Ma + T 93-99), Charlie Wedgwood (W 04-09) , Paul Clarke (SF 08-13), Kit Cutter (SF 05-10), George Terry (M 07-12) and Will Stoner (SH 01-06).

Cricketer Cup Round 2
Sunday 30 June

Drawn away at Winchester v Old Wykehamists.

OWCC batted first and scored 243 all out – (Jacob Gilder 4 – 35 and Jake Kings 2 – 45).

We bowled and fielded well to rein them in from 196 for 2 after 40 overs. In reply we never settled against their tall and fast seam bowlers. Not helped by one or two odd decisions, but above all undone by three run outs that were self-inflicted, we slumped to 35 for 5. The tail wagged in the form of matt Ewer 25 and Jaimie Noble 31 not out but we got no further than 108. Beaten then by an Old Wykehamist side that outplayed us in all areas on the day.

Good luck to them in the competition.

Our XI was Jaimie Noble (K 97-02) (capt) Joe Moxham (W 08-10), Jacob Gilder (SF 11-13), Jake Kings (W 07-12), James Jarvis (T 95-00), Tom Clarke (SH 06-11), Paul Clarke (SF 08-13), Matt Ewer (Ma + T 93-99), George Terry (M 07-12), Will Stoner (SH 01-06) & David Noble (K 96-01).

Roll on 2015!

There is a real will to play more fixtures next year.

Please let me know on hgsb@rugbyschool.net if you would like to play for the Meteors.
