Firstly could I take the opportunity to thank Guy Steele-Bodger (Tu 74-78) for, as ever, your unstinting support in organising the pitch bookings and your continued work as honorary Secretary. Thank you too to Fergus Maclehose (M 01-06) and Nik Darlington (Sh 99-04) who continue to run the Speech Day games, this is a fantastic tradition that we hope to carry on for many years to come. Stephen Richardson (C 94-99) has very kindly offered to organise some drinks, most likely April time in London. Could I also take a moment introduce myself and Jake Kings (W 06-11) who are taking over the reins of some of the Rugby Meteors cricket this season (2016) namely the Cricketer Cup side and a 'new' fixture against the Butterflies CC. We are starting to research potential player interest and would be grateful for your support to this club.
Our ambition this summer will be to rise from the ashes and rekindle some of the flames of the Meteors in the past, taking our rightful place in the public school old boy team rankings.Do let us know if you’d like to play in either of the fixtures. I will be putting together the Butterflies XI too so let’s make it a very “Meteoric” occasion! We do hope to have a full inbox of “yes’s”. Please do let me know your cricketing background and speciality. We will be in touch nearer the time – with the selected XI’s.
Meteors CC Vs Butterflies CC – 22nd May 2016
This fixture will take place on the hallowed turf of NBS. We will aim for an 11.30 start with both lunch and tea provided (match fees will apply for the umpires etc.) Format is to be confirmed depending on the sides raised. We have often overlooked the importance of Rugby School in the history of the Butterflies, which was founded in 1862 by two Old Rugbeians; Guillemard and Wilson. So please make yourselves available for what promises to be a fantastic day out.
Meteors CC Vs Marlborough Blues CC – 12th June 2016
This is the first round of the Cricketer Cup. We made the quarter-finals in 2013 and the last two years we’ve had a few last minute drop outs…which have really cost us dearly in terms of the results. Regular cricket is an essential prerequisite. Success this year would mean we equal Eton’s record in the Cricketer Cup. Please play your part in this tranche of cricketing history. Again this fixture will be on the close, it is one-day international rules with power plays et al. The game will most likely start at 11 with one break between innings.
The Captains for the games on Speech Day (28th May) will be in touch soon regarding their XI’s etc.
Charlie Wedgwood (W 04-09)
