ORRTC v Cambridge 16 September 2017

The 2017/18  season got off to a competitive start against Cambridge with a hard-fought draw, 2 all.

The top doubles pair of Oliver Buckley (W 67-71) and  Richard Bray (M 58-63) looked to be in control when they reached 5 -3 in the final set against the Cambridge pair of 2 unrelated Firths, John and James  (SF 06-11). In 2 closely fought earlier sets shared 6 -4 there was plenty of entertaining and high quality doubles. Despite Oliver’s solitary attempt at “one of his special” serves, which completely bamboozled the young James, it was the Cambridge pair which clinched victory 6-5 in the last.

The second doubles match featured Stuart Laing (St 61-66)  and Simon Hirtzel (M 79-84) against the youthful pairing of Vix Harvey and Miles Hember. This also went  to the final game in the 3rd set with Simon finding the dedans to win against a chase of better than 2 yards.

Tim Bolton-Carter (St 74-78) swapped his Rackets racquet to Real Tennis for his second appearance at the Cambridge match in recent years. He secured a point against a very capable opponent 6-4-6-3  much to his own and captain’s astonishment. Unfortunately Michael Firth (W 74-78) couldn’t repeat the achievement and went down 6-4 6-2.

Next on the schedule: the annual Brigands’ tournament for Peripatetic Teams @ Hardwick House Sat 30th Sep (Buckley & Bray representing the ORs, Satow & Goss representing the Jesters), followed by Radley College Sat 14th October.
