ORRTC v Leamington 18 February 2018

This was an enjoyable match despite the 1-4 result. The ORs managed to put out a team of 7 players with 3 singles and two doubles. After the three morning singles the ORs were already 0-3 down and heading for what looked like a heavy defeat although the tennis had been entertaining.

George Mackenzie (SF 05-10), referred to throughout by the opposition match manager for some unknown reason as George Michael, played some promising shots in his match but was a little lacking in practice and experience. Stephen Goss (B 74-79) was unlucky to find his opponent Robert Frost in rampant form, serving well and cutting the ball to a length with some venom. He was never able to put him under sufficient pressure to get into the match. Dan Jessel (M 59-64) began well, serving to a length and laying some short chases, but after leading 5-2 in the first set he began to fade. Matt Fattorini began to retrieve well on the service side and to lay some good chases when taking serve.

As so often in the past, Rugby’s spirits began to revive with the arrival of lunch and some bottles of wine. Replying to Chris Sampson’s welcoming speech the OR Match Manager referred to the fact that this was the 55th year since he had first visited Leamington with the Oxford Team in in 1963. Later in the day Matt Fattorini produced some of the Leamington records for the period including that 0U v Leamington Match.

We put on a much better performance with the doubles in the afternoon. After losing the first set 6-1, Bray (M 58-62) and Buckley (W 67-71) fought back to win the second 6-0 and recovered from 5-2 to level at 5-5 in the third. Sadly they couldn’t quite clinch it. However, Williams (M 57-62) and Firth (W 74-78) then recorded our first win with a resolute performance.
