ORRTC v Wellington 26-10-19
ORRTC played Wellington on 26 October and won 3-1-1 – our first win at Wellington since the court was opened 3 years ago.
ORs were a bit slow in finalising a team, which meant that the Wellington side was selected before they knew who we had available to match them.
It should not matter, as the handicap system adjusts quite well, however, the Wellington team had to receive several points per game from the more experienced ORs in order to even the likely result.
This basically meant that the ORs should play carefully, make no mistakes and keep getting the ball back for the opposition to mess up. Careful play of this type has not been a hallmark of OR players in recent years, so I was not especially confident of a success. However:
Rupert Derham (T 01-06) won his singles
Richard Bray (M 58-63) and Tim Bolton-Carter (St 74-78) lost their doubles
Oliver Buckley (W 67-71) and Michael Shellim (K 64-69) drew their doubles
Oliver Buckley and Richard Bray won their doubles after lunch and
Rupert Derham and Tim Bolton-Carter won the last doubles of the day
Lunch was catered by Wellington College kitchens and the fish pie was enjoyed by all – a welcome change from Lasagna and salad, which has become a bit of a cliché of Real Tennis matches!
Oliver Buckley (W 67-71)
