ORRTC v Leamington 19 February 2017
Result : Lost 4-0
Team : Oliver Buckley (W 67-71), Stephen Goss (B 74-79), Richard Bray (M 58-63), Vaughan Williams (M 57-62), Andrew Pick (K 72-76), Felicity Sargent (S 14-46) and Nick Richardson.
Despite the result this was a well contested fixture at one of our favourite venues. Following the modern trend all matches were doubles.
Goss and Buckley came within a whisker of winning the first match. Serving at 5-5 in the final set they looked like pulling it off, but Leamington regained serve and Stanton cut to beneath the tambour to win the match.
Bray and Buckley, fresh from winning the Cattermull Cup for the ORs, proved somewhat disappointing and lost in two sets. Buckley was understandably tired after his previous 3 setter and perhaps more significantly a late night bridge session.
Williams and Pick, renewing his acquaintance with the game after a long sabbatical, played some excellent tennis but had to concede to some occasional eccentric and devastating play by the opposition.
Our final match featured our newest and first female member Felicity Sargent. She struck the ball particularly well with the now popular double handed backhand. Alas the Leamington pair had just too much court craft.
Lunch in the Regency dining room, was, as ever, a most congenial event.
Oliver Buckley (W 67-71)
