Athletics is a major games option available to both girls and boys in the Trinity term. It runs alongside cricket, tennis and rounders. Athletics and tennis are the only major games, which run on a mixed (boy/girl) basis.
All F block pupils partake in some athletics. They are introduced to the range of track and field events, culminating in Sports Day. Sports Day is a whole-School event held on the evening before Speech Day at the beginning of the May Exeat. Each House puts forward a team comprised of all year groups.
All pupils showing aptitude in any event choose athletics as their games option for the term. If a pupil is also a strong tennis or cricket player, there is the opportunity for them to represent the School in both sports.
Training takes place at the Rugby Town tartan track at the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre, on the fringe of the School campus. Pupils take part in four sessions of athletics training per week in the Trinity term, with coaching in each of the specialised events.
We run a full fixture list with other public schools where pupils compete in age-group categories (U15, U17 and U19). Competition is also provided in other multi-school events such as the English Schools Combined Events Championships, Track and Field Cup, National Track and Field Championships and the Achilles Relays.
Recent successes include reaching the national final of the Track and Field Cup with the ‘inter’ girls team and also with the ‘inter’ boys team. Individual athletes have also tasted success, qualifying and competing in the National Track and Field Championship finals.
