History of Art primarily explores painting, sculpture and architecture in the period 500BC to AD 2000, although students will also study prints, photography and contemporary media. The two-year course specifically covers Western art history and encourages students to consider the contexts in which art is produced and viewed as well as enabling them to analyse and interpret works of art within these contexts.
History of Art is complemented by the study of other humanities such as History, Classics and English Literature. It is an academic discipline and requires an ability to assess, order and interpret information. The examination is essay based with no practical elements.
Experiencing works of art first hand is an important part of History of Art and the department provides students with opportunities to see works in galleries both national and internationally. Previous visits have included New York and Rome. Through the History of Art society, students are able to hear a wide variety of speakers in order to enhance their understanding.
