I am often asked what we value most at Rugby School.
We value people who are kind and therefore are predisposed to be inclusive of others.
We value academic achievement because clarity of thought and expression is what changes the world. Therefore, unlike most schools, we offer both A levels and IB so the student can select, with help from our staff, the option that best suits their ways of learning.
We value people who are grounded, who ‘see life steady and see it whole’ and so are able to be true to themselves. This involves recognising that bandwagons do not have to be jumped on.
We value people who are courageous and prepared to take a risk when there is no guarantee of success. Such people are strong because they are not afraid of failure. This encourages an atmosphere that is challenging but not intimidating.
And people who are curious, therefore always ready to ask ‘What next?’
When our students grow in this way, they become able to influence their own lives and the lives of others for the better.
That is what makes our school community worthwhile. We give our students choices and chances they might otherwise not have had. We help them find out what is worth caring about and what’s not. We help them understand that a broader perspective builds a better community. It takes whole people to do that, which is why we say:

Our World
Rugby is a school of today and of tomorrow. We are characterised by an attitude that is grounded and straightforward whilst at the same time generating all round high performance way above the norm.
This marks us out from other schools because these qualities are more valuable now than ever before. That is perhaps why we are fast becoming the country’s co-ed full boarding school of choice – a school where everything is geared to preparation for the real world in all its wonder and complexity. This is why families from the North, South, East and West, as well as those from 51 countries of the world, who could have chosen any school, choose Rugby.
Being on the frontier of pedagogical development allows us to deal more effectively with some of the serious issues faced by our students. For example, we are able to manage more effectively than either parents alone or day schools the evident threats to teenage wellbeing posed by social media. Or, in another example, we are able to give our students an understanding, functional and philosophical, of the opportunities and threats presented to them by Artificial Intelligence and remind them that, despite its manifest benefits, human interaction always remains paramount.
Taken in conjunction with everything else we offer, it is the added input and insight of this kind that makes us a school of consequence.
Our Culture
Rugby School is an attitude to life. Every step of the way we are encouraged not to give up, not to take the easy way out. We do not show off, but we are determined to succeed. We welcome students from all walks of life, indeed, the Arnold Foundation which offers full bursaries, is one of the largest such programmes in the country.
When we start our time here we are exposed to many things from music, theatre, dance to D of E, to sports of all kinds, to activities and clubs, to our popular Rugby 360 community programme. Then, once we have tried many things, we focus – first breadth, then depth. We are encouraged and supported at every turn, with the result that those who may not seem destined to be high-fliers fly high.
Our Daily Life
Our life here is based around the House we are in. Each claims without hesitation that theirs is unquestionably the best. And each House interprets the school in its own way, always through the lens of developing the whole person. Similarly, we have a uniform but do not seek uniformity in its wearer.
Whether Boarding or Day, belonging is a two way street – whilst we belong to a given House, a part of that House will forever and always belong to us. It is in the House that we eat all our meals, where manners, conversation and laughter amongst friends is learnt. The guiding principle is ‘make it work’, and we do.
The House is also a place of benign check points, a place where apparently unimportant conversations with the matron, the tutor, the older student are in fact important conversations and attention is paid to them. The transformational power of the incidental chat is well recognised.
We learn to look beyond flaws in order to see the best in people and never to torpedo the person who is trying their best. Thanks to our immense co-curricular opportunities we have the chance to become different people in different contexts, to try on different personas to see how they fit and out of them to create a whole. This is how we grow, in a place of strong opinions, loosely held. Like a family there are of course disagreements and like a family, the bond is unconditional.

This is our mantra. Our students all know it, our teachers all know it, our coaches, and our parents know it. We live it. It is without doubt demanding to do all the things that make us good in many areas, interested broadly, able to turn our hand, to contribute, to make a difference.
We cannot develop talents we do not know we have until we are put into situations we do not expect. If you think you can or if you think you can’t, you are probably right. Whole people think they can .It is not magic, but the result is something close to it.

Governance and Leadership
Rugby School is guided by a committed Governing Body and an experienced leadership team who work in close partnership to ensure the school’s long‑term success. The Governing Body provides strategic oversight and stewardship of the school’s values, while the Executive Leadership Team, led by the Head Master, is responsible for delivering this strategy and providing collective leadership across the school. Supported by the wider Senior Management Team, they ensure high standards across academic, pastoral, and operational life.

Rugby is a busy, seven-day-a-week boarding school. All full-time teachers are accommodated in recognition of the distinctive nature of boarding education.
