Academic Life
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
Public exams – GCSEs and A levels – are a fact of education in the UK and you will be taking those exams in Years 11 and 12/13.
We offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) as an alternative to A Levels so you will have a choice as to which route to take when the time comes to decide. Not many schools offer this. You will receive support in how you choose which exams to take and how to study and prepare for them.
Students study six subjects. They must complete a Literature course, a second language, a humanity, a science, mathematics and a free sixth choice which can be an arts subject a second language, humanity or a science subject.
Both A Levels and the IB allow access to the best universities, and the choice of curriculum is a powerful motivator for our students.
Pre-IB at Rugby School
The Pre-IB programme is a one-year pathway for a small cohort (approx. 20) of international students in Year 11, preparing them for entry to the IB Diploma Programme at 16+ while offering the full British boarding school experience.
Students follow a broad and demanding academic prorgamme, securing valuable GCSE/IGCSE qualifications in English Language, Mathematics, Two Sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Physics), One Humanity (History, Geography or Philosophy) and One Modern Language (French, German, Italian or Spanish).
The Pre-IB programme is designed to build strong subject knowledge across key disciplines; develop academic confidence, study skills and resilience; strengthen English language fluency; prepare students for British boarding school life; and provide a clear and supported pathway to the IB Diploma at Rugby School.

The admission process is the same as it is for UK residents. We expect all applicants to attend interviews at Rugby in Year 7.
We are happy for applicants to sit our entrance tests overseas under appropriate supervision.
The admission process is the same as it is for UK residents except that the closing date for applications for those currently at school outside the UK will be the last Friday in August, rather than in September. We expect all applicants to attend our entrance tests and interviews at Rugby. We schedule interviews for overseas Scholarship applicants to be on the day following the entrance tests if at all possible.
For students whose parents’ normal residence is outside the UK the School will require a deposit of one term’s fees in advance, as well as the first term’s fees.
