Examination date: Tuesday 23 February 2027
A substantial number of Academic Scholarships at 13+ are awarded annually.
Candiates must be under 14 years old on 1 September in the year in which the examination is taken.
Places in the School may be ganted by the Head to candidates no previously registered for entry who, though not elected to a Scholarship, do well in the examinations.
Candidates who were previously registered for entry and who do not obtain awards are normally admitted to the School on the result of the Schholarship examination; in a few cases, the candidates may be required to sit all or part of the Rugby School Examinations before admission.
The results of the Scholarship Examination will be posted on or before Friday 5 March 2026.
1. All candidates will be required to sit papers in English and Mathematics and have a 20 minute interview with a senior member of the Academic Team.
2. Candidates are invited to choose 2 or 3 papers from Science, Humanities and Languages groups. They will be required to take a paper in at least two of these groups.
3. There will be no requirement to sit a speaking language exam.
Candiates must choose 2 or 3 papers to sit from at least 2 of the following groups:
GROUP 1: Science (45 minutes)
- General Science Examinations
GROUP 2: Humanities (45 minutes)
- History
- Geography
GROUP 3: Languages (45 minutes)
- French
- German
- Spanish
- Latin
- Greek
- All papers are based on knowledge of the Common Entrance syllabus and will be 45 minutes in length with the exception being English and Maths which will be a 1 hour paper.
- We set our own Academic Scholarship papers. Past papers can only be issued to schools preparing candidates for the Scholarship examination.
- The use of calculators is not permitted in any paper apart from the Science paper.
- The use of dictionaries is not permitted.
- Candidates who are entitled to extra time will be allowed the % time they receive in their current school.
All interviews and written papers take place in the Collingwood Centre.
If a scholarship is awarded, fees may be augmented by means-tested bursary support up to 100% of the boarding or day fees.

In order for your bursary application to be considered, your child must be registered with the School and the Registration Fee (if applicable) paid in full. Applications submitted after the closing date may not be assessed until after the result of a scholarship application is known.
