The Art Scholarship assessments will be based on the production of a critical essay, a current portfolio, a practical assessment (still life) and an interview with the Head of Art.
As part of the Scholarship Application, we request the submission of a digital portfolio and an essay. The digital portfolio (preferably as a PowerPoint presentation) should be no more than 10 slides; one work on each slide, with notes to detail media, size and date. The essay should be a 500-word critical assessment of the influences that have inspired the candidate.
The portfolio should show evidence of self-initiated projects as well as work realised at school and must reflect a good range of media, styles and techniques. There is also an expectation that the candidate will have a keen interest in artists and their work.
All candidates who wish to be considered for an Art Scholarship MUST attend Rugby School for a practical assessment. Practical assessment will take place on 8 October 2026 from 14.30 to 17.00 in the Design Centre, Rugby School.
Candidates should also bring a physical portfolio of their work with them to the practical assessment. Part of the assessment afternoon will involve an interview with the Head of Art, where candidates will discuss their work, ideas and influences.
In the event that the Art scholarship application is over-subscribed, we reserve the right to select candidates for assessment based on the quality of their digital portfolio and essay submissions.
If an Art scholarship is awarded, the pupil will be required to take Art either as an IB Higher Level subject or as an A level subject.
Note to candidates and their teachers:
The approach of the Rugby School Art Department is very open, covering a broad range of disciplines. Whilst this approach is accepting of most forms of making art, all work is underpinned with a high standard of observational drawing. In addition, the ability to evaluate critically the work of others and one’s own work is essential. The Department is looking for candidates with a good skill base, imagination, sensitivity, flair and, above all, enthusiasm.
