Closing date for applications: 18 September 2026
The Scholarship audition will generally take place in conjunction with the sixth form entrance examinations on either Tuesday 3 November or Thursday 5 November 2026. It may be taken at a later date by arrangement but the School cannot guarantee that a place will be available for September, if this is after the academic entrance examinations.
Candidates should prepare the following:
- two contrasting pieces on their principal instrument
- one piece on another instrument (if offered – see below)
Additionally, candidates will be given:
- a sight reading test on their principal instrument
- aural tests
- an opportunity to talk about their musical interests and experience
- For the 16+ music scholarship it would be normally expected that a candidate would demonstrate ability on their principal instrument at approximately Grade 8 standard, though it is not mandatory for candidates to have passed this examination.
- We are looking for musical potential and commitment and candidates are advised to perform music that they are comfortable with - more credit is given for an outstanding performance of a piece of reasonable difficulty than for a mediocre performance of a very difficult piece.
- Candidates who play one instrument only are encouraged to apply.
- We place considerable emphasis on singing in the department but it is very rare for a scholarship to be awarded to a candidate who only offers voice.
- An accompanist will be available for the scholarships though candidates are very welcome to bring their own pianist if they prefer.
- Before submitting their application, candidates are encouraged to meet the Director of Music for an informal discussion and also to experience taster lessons with the vocal/instrumental teachers. This is an ideal opportunity to talk about aspects of music at Rugby School and for the candidates to meet some of the music staff who will be involved in the Scholarship audition.

- All awards are conditional upon the academic entrance requirements of Rugby being met.
The Music Department offers its Scholars support and access to a range of activities designed to develop and extend their experience and skills.
- Music Scholars are given extra tutorials by members of the Music Department to support and encourage their musical development.
- Music Scholars have free music lessons (unless otherwise specified) and are encouraged to try out other instruments of their choice. We cater for all levels of ability, from beginner to post-diploma performers in a wide range of instruments.
- Involvement in an ensemble of like-minded musicians is one of life’s great experiences and pleasures. Music Scholars are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of musical groups, including two Chapel Choirs, Choral Society, the Arnold Singers, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Orchestra, Chamber groups, Musicals and rock bands.
Awards may be reviewed from time to time and are conditional upon satisfactory progress and attitude being maintained.
