About the House
Michell House is situated opposite the Music Schools and the Temple Speech Room, close to the Old Quad and the Chapel.
Built and paid for by Housemaster WG Michell, the House counts Dick Seaman, Robert Hardy and AN Wilson among its old boys. It is built around a newly surfaced quad used by all years for games, while the front garden, formerly a grass tennis court, is used in summer for all kinds of ball games, and there is a tranquil orchard at the back.
Each year group has its own common room, and available to all the boys are a snooker room and a projector room with four large sofas beside the communal kitchen. First year boys have a private study adjacent to the Housemaster while sharing a dormitory upstairs, and from the second year every boy has his own study bedroom.
Michell has a strong reputation in sport, particularly athletics and soccer, alongside academic and music scholars. Served by a dedicated team of tutors, matrons and caterers, it is a warm, friendly House where diversity, openness and friendship are encouraged and where every boy is given the best opportunity to fulfil his potential.
Ben Welch, Housemaster
Ben Welch studied Electronic Engineering at Cardiff University before working in a variety of design and research jobs in some interesting locations, and then completing his PGCE, also in Cardiff.
Ben has been teaching Design and Technology at Rugby School since 2014, and is now Housemaster of School House. When he is not in the workshop, he can usually be found outside coaching rugby, soccer and athletics, working with the Royal Marines CCF or organising Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions.
In his spare time Ben is a keen cyclist, adventurer and traveller, and in the evenings it is rare to find him unaccompanied by Scamper, his yellow Labrador.
