About the House

Stanley is located centrally in the School, next to the Temple Reading Room, with views of the Close and Chapel.

Stanley is a sixth form boarding house. We welcome students from many backgrounds and nationalities.

Our aim is to help these sixth formers prepare for university. An experienced team of tutors and subject specialists works closely with the girls on their UCAS applications and IB or A level studies, helping them develop independence and resilience.

Stanley girls are motivated and ambitious. They work hard but also play hard, and we help new girls integrate through social events, from drink swaps to bingo nights. They take leading roles in clubs, societies and sports teams, with strong representation on the leveé (prefect) body. With only two years to make the most of all that Rugby offers, life is busy, yet visitors often comment on the House's homely atmosphere, and the girls' wellbeing is our priority.

Joanne Brett, Housemistress

Joanne Brett is originally from South Africa, where she qualified with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and English, an Honours Degree in Geography and her PGCE. She has authored a number of Geography and Tourism textbooks and study guides. Before moving to Rugby, she was Deputy Head Academic at a girls' day school in London.

Joanne arrived at Rugby School in September 2023 as Acting Head of Geography, and since January 2025 has been Housemistress of Stanley, where she continues to teach both Physical and Human Geography. She is married with two teenage sons, along with Astro and Twix, two dogs who are a constant source of entertainment.

Joanne enjoys a good chat over coffee or tea, and firmly believes that laughter is the best medicine. When she is not teaching, she enjoys a family braai (BBQ), reading, catching up on television programmes and exploring National Trust sites in the area.

"Stanley is built on kindness, curiosity and resilience, where we all play a part in shaping our community. As a Sixth Form only House, we support each other to be the best we can be and this makes Stanley a genuinely special place."

Isabel, Head of House
