Additional information

Mouthguards

All Rugby School students playing hockey and rugby football must wear mouthguards. This follows the advice from the Rugby Football Union and England Hockey.

Mouthguards need to be custom made for each individual. Off-the-shelf items and mouldable guards do not provide the same degree of protection, can be easily dislodged and even swallowed. Whilst you will appreciate that the School
cannot be held responsible in any circumstances for the consequences of a student’s failure to wear a mouthguard during matches and practices, whether issued with one or not, we will endeavour to ensure that they follow our advice.

This follows the guidelines set down by the National Governing Body of each sport. Any dental injury received whilst not wearing a mouthguard when participating in rugby football and hockey sporting activities is not covered in the School’s
dental insurance plan and will therefore be recharged to parents.

Parents of all new students please note the following:

Opro Mouthguards will be catering for all students wishing to purchase a custom, dental-fit mouthguard and will be visiting the School on the following dates as well as providing their remote e-fittings service:

  • Sunday 21 June – New Students Day
  • Monday 31 August – Start of Term
  • Tuesday 1 September

If you wish to take advantage of this service, please complete the online order form in advance of June or September.

This can be found on the Rugby School Portal.

All Opro mouthguards are provided with Rugby School designs, and cost £46.99 for in-school fittings, with all replacement/spare guards at a 50% discount. Opro’s prices are vastly reduced from dental practices and similar services and include:

  • Impression supervised by a GDC registered dentists
  • Custom guards manufactured to achieve the highest level of protection available
  • Student’s name embedded on under-side
  • Free boil & bite mouthguard provided for use in sporting fixtures during turnaround time of custom guard-fitting session only
  • Free delivery

Opro also provide mouthguard options for those with a fixed brace and your preferred fitting method can be selected on the School’s online order form. New fitting methods have been incorporated to allow you the option of a fitting at a time that suits you, offer a further discounted price from previous years and to cater for mouthguard fittings remotely.

Any questions on school mouthguards or any of the details above should be sent directly to Opro (not to School staff) via their customer service email address: info@oprogroup.com

Opro suggest that orders should be placed in advance of the fittings at the school to avoid any delays on the day of fitting or on getting your guards back to you.

Cricket Helmets

From April 1st 2016, the ICC and ECB have introduced new safety standards for all cricket helmets. The following is taken direct from ECB advice.

The ECB and PCA strongly encourage all cricket clubs and cricketers to review their existing head protector equipment. In this Guidance Note, references to “head protectors” means helmets with a faceguard or grille.

The design and manufacture of cricket head protectors is now governed by British Standard BS7928:2013, which has been adopted by the ICC as the international standard. The standard ECB/PCA playing contract for professional cricketers also specifies that any helmet provided to a player by his employer club must meet this safety standard. Note that BS7928:2013 specifies different tests for helmets to be used in senior and junior cricket, reflecting the smaller ball size used in the latter.

Head protectors that have been tested against the new standard and will be clearly labelled with “BS7928:2013” and will contain clear labelling setting out whether a head protector has been tested against (i) men’s standard ball size of 5 ½
ounces, (ii) junior standard ball size of 4 ¾ ounces, or (iii) both men’s and junior size balls.

The manufacturers have advised that there is currently no specific women’s head protector and so there is no specific standard for women’s cricket head protectors. As the size of the standard women’s cricket ball is between the standard
men and junior balls, it is recommended that women use head protectors that have been tested against both the men’s and junior sized ball or at least against the junior size ball (as the smaller ball could potentially get through the gap above
the face guard on a men’s head protector).

Cricket Helmets in School matches

Since 2000, the ECB has published safety guidance regarding the wearing of head protectors by all cricketers under the age of 18. The ECB’s current guidance is that all cricketers under the age of 18 must wear a head protector whilst batting in matches or practice sessions.

Wicketkeepers under the age of 18 should wear a head protector with a faceguard, or a wicketkeeper face protector, at all times when standing up to the stumps.

Any individual taking responsibility for any player(s) under the age of 18 should take reasonable steps to ensure this guidance is followed at all times. No parental consent to the non-wearing of a head protector will be accepted by any Rugby
School Cricket staff.

All cricket teams at Rugby School will be provided with two approved Gray Nicholls Cricket Helmets which will be available to all Batsmen and Wicket Keepers in line with the ECB recommendations.

The helmets listed below are those for which evidence has been provided to the ECB by the relevant manufacturer that the standard has been met and the appropriate authority to display a “CE quality mark” granted.

The list below are approved Helmets for use in senior and junior cricket and have been tested against both men’s and junior balls:

Gray-Nicolls
Atomic Helmet+ (available in School Shop)
Test Opener Helmet
Omega XRD Helmet

Should you wish to buy a helmet for your son or daughter, or for more information, please contact the Sports Department: sports@rugbyschool.net
