Financial support for local children.

The Foundation Award is a means-tested award that widens access to a Rugby School education for local children.

When considering applications for a Foundation Award, the criteria we base decisions on are:

  • That the child should live within 20 miles of Rugby School and be applying for a Day place
  • That the child should demonstrate during our assessment the potential to contribute strongly to the academic and co-curricular life at Rugby School
  • That parents should be assessed as being eligible for more than 10% means-tested bursary support towards fees.

There are currently 66 students at Rugby School who have been granted a Foundation Award.

The process

Assessment

Awards will be based on performance in a day of assessment at Rugby School; this will consist of Foundation Award examinations in English and Mathematics (no calculator permitted).

There will also be Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning Tests. Foundation Awards will also consider a wider need for an education at Rugby School. In all cases reports from an applicant's current school
will be of crucial importance. Those awarded a Foundation Award will not be considered as Scholars, but may be considered for an honorary Academic Scholarship Award, depending on their GCSE results
as a student at Rugby School, for entry to the sixth form. Foundation Award candidates will also have a general academic interview with a senior member of the Academic Team.

Candidates will also be interviewed for a place in the Day houses.
This combination of assessment will give candidates the full range of opportunity to show academic potential through native enthusiasm, industry, breadth of knowledge and personality.

For September 2027 entry, the interviews and examinations will take place at Rugby School on Thursday 14 January 2027.

Award and Augmentation

The value of a Foundation award is a fee concession of between 10% and 100% based on a means-tested bursary assessment which parents or legal guardians of the awardee may elect to accept.

More than one award or scholarship can be awarded to a candidate although the total fee reduction is based on the means-tested bursary assessment. To access bursary support a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances must be completed and should be submitted to the Bursar before the examination closing date.

Completed bursary applications received after the closing date will not be assessed until after the result of a scholarship application is known and any bursary award may not then be offered at the time of joining the School. We are not able to provide an indication of the amount of financial assistance that may be available until Bursary Application Form has been completed, which can be started from the below link.
