IB values embedded from day one
The cross-curricular connections that sit at the heart of the IB Diploma are already embedded at Rugby from day one. The core elements of Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity and Service and the Extended Essay, alongside the breadth of academic disciplines studied, are not new concepts for our students but familiar ways of thinking and working.
As a result, our children already think and act like IB Diploma students well before they enter the programme in Year 12. For those joining Rugby in the Sixth Form, the established culture makes it far easier to adopt these dispositions. In turn, the energy and curiosity they bring are warmly welcomed and enrich the wider student body.
Rugby’s co-educational, full boarding environment is home to a diverse community. Students benefit from a philosophy grounded in coaching, with a clear focus on individual growth through reflection and action. The IB Programme in detail
Quite simply, the IB Diploma is a world-renowned gold standard academic qualification. It has a reputation for consistency and Diploma students are considered as being of the highest calibre.
Students study six subjects. They must complete a Literature course (group 1), a second language (group 2), a humanity (group 3), a science (group 4), mathematics (group 5), and then they have a free sixth choice which can be an arts subject (group 6), a second language, humanity or a science subject.
Three of their subjects are studied in greater depth (Higher Level) and three are studied in less depth (Standard Level).
In addition, every student takes the IB Diploma ‘Core’. This means completing a creativity, activity and service (CAS) project and carrying out regular reflections. They attend Theory of Knowledge lessons and write a ‘Knowledge Essay’ to explore the nature of knowledge draw on learning and understanding across at least two of the subjects they are studying. Finally, they will complete an Extended Essay, a university-style research essay in a subject and on a question of their choice.

One of the key benefits to the Diploma is its incredible breadth and skills crossover.
For example, learning Mandarin may benefit international business, or improved mathematics could help negotiate the graduate recruitment process and allow for a better understanding of work processes in a new job. A firmer foundation in English can boost the quality of written applications and add confidence when report writing in the workplace.
The rigor of the Extended Essay is excellent preparation for the independent work required to succeed at university giving a clear, competitive advantage over those who haven’t benefitted from the IB.
Theory of Knowledge lessons encourage critical thought and a deeper understanding – skills that are prized by employers but lacking in many graduates.
Add to this the breadth of subject matter spanning local, national and global perspectives that provide an enhanced appreciation of the world and its people, it is no surprise so many top universities make more generous offers to diploma students.
Our goal is to give our students a competitive edge when they set off for higher education and employment. The IB Diploma programme is a central part of the benefits to be gained from a Rugby education.
The IB Diploma is suited to absolutely all students because of its flexibility and breadth, which allows everyone to shape the curriculum to their individual needs and interests.
It is quite simply recognised as a world class qualification by universities across the globe and the core disciplines clearly benefit employment prospects.
Students with any level of prior attainment can take the Diploma and achieve success. If the ambition is to secure a place at one of the world’s elite universities – a score of 43-45 points will stand out from the A*A*A* Level equivalent.
The wide spread of subjects also allows every student to amass points across the board, achieving more and developing further than they might have done on an A Level route.
So a better question to ask is, ‘What kind of adult do I want to become?’

IB Diploma student profiles
Sofiia Yarytska (S 23–25)
Sofiia achieved an outstanding score of 44 out of 45 in the IB Diploma this year, securing her place at Princeton University.
Originally from Western Ukraine, she joined Rugby School in 2023 and thoroughly enjoyed her two years here sharing, “Rugby was without doubt the most formative chapter of my life, shaping me both as a person and a student.”
Sofiia shared her reflections on the programme:
“The IB was everything I could have asked for and more – stimulating, demanding, and deeply rewarding. I loved the variety, the way different subjects seemed to speak to each other, and the constant intellectual spark.”
Benedict Lenton (T 23–25)
Benedict joined Rugby School for the Sixth Form as a music scholar. During his time here, he performed both at School and on professional stages while completing the IB Diploma.
Reflecting on his experience, Benedict said:
“The IB programme at Rugby School has taught me far more than just the content of its diverse syllabus. Over the past two years, the commitment required by such a broad course has strengthened my ability to manage my time effectively.
Being pulled in so many directions, whether in Science or Humanities, has helped me appreciate that life itself can be viewed from multiple perspectives. We are delighted to share with you a short summary of our most recent evaluation visit from the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
We are pleased to share that since its introduction in 2021, the IB has been a great success, with our overall average point score of 36 points per student, in comparison to both the UK and world average which stands at 29 points.
