Rugby’s co-curricular programme is a crucial part of our Whole Person Whole Point ethos. It helps students to develop their own interests and skills and, from our wide range of opportunities, to discover new ones.
We think it’s just as important as the academic programme for acquiring the attitudes and aptitudes to become a well-rounded, broad-minded adult, someone who is curious and versatile, and who is confident when faced with new situations.
What you choose to do is down to you, but we encourage you to have a go at some new things every term. It’s a way of discovering, and testing, yourself. You may be surprised when you turn out not only to enjoy doing something you hadn’t thought of trying before, but also become really good at it.
If this sounds a bit daunting, you will soon find out how to manage your timetable sensibly and, with the help of your tutor, how to prioritise your commitments so that your academic work does not suffer.

Clubs & societies
The space to explore ideas, deepen interests, and build confidence beyond the classroom. Many societies are student‑led, which encourages initiative and leadership.
School trips and exchanges
Field trips, subject-specific overseas visits, residential creative writing courses and expeditions (eg The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – DofE – which has keen participation across the School) take place for all year groups.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Currently we have 360 students taking part in the DofE Awards (Bronze, Silver and Gold). In Year 9 it starts as an introduction to outward bound activities (like climbing, kayaking and mounting biking); as you move up the School into the Sixth Form the expeditions become more ambitious. This year our students are heading to Scotland for their Gold Award expedition.
The Combined Cadet Force
We have around 200 students taking part in the CCF as part of our leadership programme. The students take part in outdoor pursuits like clay pigeon shooting and abseiling, and use our 10-metre climbing wall and our 25-metre shooting range.
