Award-winning poet kick starts creativity for young writers

The award-winning poet and short story writer, Anthony Anaxagorou, who is Rugby School’s 2023 Poet in Residence, has kicked off an exciting series of workshops for keen student writers.

The British-born Cypriot poetry educator worked with the youngest creative writers this month encouraging them to take imaginative leaps in their poems, steering them towards the absurd and surprising in order to develop new and original work.

He recommended fun ways to kickstart new poems, such as ‘magpie-ing’ lines from books on the library shelves and setting time limits to avoid over-thinking.

Anthony will be running a series of workshops and events throughout the School year, including one-to-one poetry ‘surgeries’ with individual writers and an open mic night with young poets from other schools across Rugby town.
