LXX Chemists Rise to the Challenge in National Competition

Sixteen of Rugby School’s talented LXX Chemistry pupils recently took part in the prestigious Schools’ Analyst Competition, a nationwide event organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Designed to stretch and inspire the next generation of scientific minds, the competition gave our students the opportunity to apply their analytical chemistry skills to real-world challenges.

Working in teams of three in our own laboratories, the students tackled a series of experiments including titrations, chromatographic techniques, and spectroscopic analysis. While some tasks drew on familiar A-level content, others introduced advanced techniques rarely encountered in the classroom, offering a glimpse into the tools and methods used by professional chemists.

The competition emphasised not only technical accuracy but also critical thinking, collaboration, and perseverance — skills highly valued in both academia and industry. All participating students received certificates to recognise their achievements, and their results have been submitted to the regional judging panel for consideration in the next stage of the competition.

Dr Stephen Belding, Head of Chemistry, said:

“It’s always inspiring to see our pupils take on professional-level chemistry with such enthusiasm and care. Competitions like this remind them — and us — that chemistry is not just a subject, but a way of solving real problems in the world.”

We are incredibly proud of all sixteen students for their commitment, precision, and scientific curiosity. Whatever the outcome, the experience has deepened their understanding of analytical chemistry and affirmed the vital role it plays in modern science.
