Women in STEM at Rugby School: 50 Years of Girls
This year Rugby School proudly celebrates 50 Years of Girls, a milestone that invites us to reflect on the progress made in creating an inclusive and balanced learning environment for students. One area where this progress is particularly evident is within the teaching of STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Traditionally, these disciplines have been viewed as male-dominated, both at school and professional levels. Yet at Rugby, the presence and influence of female teachers in STEM are a powerful reminder of how far we have come in challenging those assumptions.
Within the Computer Science department, two out of three teachers are women. In Mathematics, five of the fourteen teachers are women, while in Physics, women make up half the team, with three out of six teachers. When we look at the Sciences overall, twelve of twenty-three teachers are women.
These statistics are more than numbers: they reflect the commitment of Rugby School to creating a learning environment where all students can see themselves represented in their teachers. Representation matters, particularly in subjects where stereotypes may deter students from pursuing their interests or ambitions. By seeing women leading and inspiring our students are encouraged to imagine broader possibilities for their own futures.
As we celebrate 50 Years of Girls at Rugby, we also take pride in the contribution of our female teachers in STEM. Their knowledge, leadership and example enrich our teaching and reflect the School’s continuing commitment to opportunity and equality.
