Year 11 Academic Conference Unites Students Across Three Schools to Explore Theme of ‘Connections’

Students from Rugby School, Avon Valley School & Performing Arts College, and Holly Lodge Girls’ College gathered at Rugby School on Friday 26 September 2025 for the eighth annual Year 11 Academic Conference. The event formed the culmination of a significant academic project in which students researched, wrote, and presented a 1,500-word paper linked to the theme ‘Connections’.

The conference followed an extensive programme of workshops, research support and mentoring designed to prepare students for university-style study. Over several months, delegates were guided through the process of developing a research question, conducting academic enquiry and presenting their findings with clarity and confidence.

On the day, students delivered their papers in formal seminar sessions, each followed by a period of discussion and questions from peers and staff. The range of topics reflected the breadth of the theme, with papers addressing subjects spanning science, the humanities, technology, culture and global issues.

The conference also featured three distinguished keynote speakers whose expertise enriched the academic experience for all participants. Dr Sam Alberti, Director of Collections at National Museums Scotland, opened the event with an exploration of the cultural and scientific significance of museum specimens. Thatcher, a current Rugby School student and founder of the Feynman Society, delivered the second keynote, examining the intersections of mathematics, physics, and uncertainty. The final address was given by Dr Eleanor Janega, medieval historian, broadcaster and author, who discussed classical and medieval ideas of gender and their relevance to the modern world.

Staff from participating schools praised both the academic challenge and the spirit of collaboration fostered by the event.

Andy Keen, Headmaster of Holly Lodge Girls’ College, said:

“The conference is a rare chance for students to pursue an area of interest to them before presenting their findings to an appreciative and considerate audience. The whole process is thought-provoking, challenging and fun for students who really want to test themselves and hone their skills of research, public speaking and going to new places. I cannot recommend the academic conference highly enough.”

Reflecting on the partnership between the schools, Emily Grant-Harros, English Teacher at Avon Valley School, commented:

“It has been a pleasure to attend the event and build our local connection with Rugby School – a prestigious and welcoming institution. The event was extremely well organised and gave our students a unique insight into academic discourse.”

Now in its eighth year, the Year 11 Academic Conference continues to strengthen relationships between the three schools while encouraging students to develop independence, intellectual curiosity, and academic confidence. Its sustained success demonstrates the powerful impact of collaborative scholarship and the shared commitment of all three institutions to fostering ambition, critical thinking, and meaningful connections.
